Chapter Nine

Evelyn

Three nights later, Evelyn and Dara sat on the floor of Evelyn’s sparsely furnished apartment, an open grease-stained pizza box sitting between them. Dara had been delighted to discover that Evelyn packed her record player and had set it up immediately. The last of the boxes were finally unpacked. For the first time in her life, everything seemed to be in its place. Her roommate was out with some new friends from her study abroad orientation group. So, naturally, Evelyn invited Dara over as soon as she realized that she had the place to herself.

“I can’t believe you like pepperoni,” she teased as she fished another slice out of the box. Most of the time, Dara was a staunch vegetarian, so when she left Dara in charge of the pizza-ordering duties, she had expected some iteration of veggie delight.

“I’m veg, except for the two times each year when I miss pepperoni pizza,” Dara clarified.

“Well I’m glad I’m around to witness this historic occasion. It should be a holiday really.”

“Come on, you don’t have a favorite food that’s also sort of embarrassing?”

“Cinnamon toast, I guess,” Evelyn said after thinking for a moment.

“What’s that?” Dara asked plopping a pepperoni into her mouth.

“What do ya mean? It’s cinnamon toast,” Evelyn had assumed that this was a childhood staple, but apparently she was wrong.

“I’ve never heard of this until right now. Ev, I’m dead serious.”

“Okay well it’s quite simple, really. First you make toast, then you slather it in butter, and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top. It’s life-changing, I used to make it at school whenever I had a bad day, because it was my favorite afterschool snack as a kid.”

Dara’s eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, “I don’t know how you’re still alive. That sounds gross.”

“Dara Margaret, I’m going to pretend that you didn’t just slander the greatest snack on this planet.”

“And I’m going to pretend that Thommo never told you my middle name.”

Suddenly, the phone rang, yet another perk of having her own apartment. Evelyn and her roommate had decided to split the cost of a landline, but few people knew the number.

“Who could that be?” Dara asked.

“If it’s my mom I’m going to lose it,” Evelyn declared while dashing off into the kitchen.

She grabbed the phone on the fourth ring, “Hello?”

“Hi, is this Evelyn? It’s Meredith,” Evelyn had given Meredith her number as soon as she set the phone up. She quite liked Meredith. They had met for coffee a couple of times at the other coffee shop in town and they ended up talking for hours.

“Yeah! How have you been Meredith, what’s up?”

“I’m wonderful actually! I was calling to see if you’d want to meet up at a bar with me and some friends, at a bar a couple of towns over. You can bring Dara. It’s a gay bar actually, but Friday night is lesbian night and there’s drinks and dancing. It’s lovely.”

Evelyn hesitated. Though making out with Dara was practically her favorite activity, she was still hesitant to label herself as a lesbian.
